I get asked a lot of questions about this group, sometimes in person, and sometimes in the form of hate threads on reddit1. Here’s a post quickly answering all of the most common questions.
Where are the books?
No books allowed. Next question.
Do y’all really take this that seriously?
No, you idiot. Do we look like a bunch of Norwegian edgelords to you?
Wait - we do? Oh. Well… next question.
What is it y’all even do?
We hang out and listen to black metal. Sometimes, other metal genres. Sometimes, we don’t even listen to metal at all. The short answer is “nothing”.
The even longer answer is that - once a week - we play music together at the home of whoever has yet to piss off their neighbors. The next day, we host a record club at Two Tides Brewing. The day after, we take over the music at White Whale Craft Ales. Other times, we brainstorm events in a joint effort with other local collectives of a similar crowd, such as the folks at Neighborhood Comics or Chosen Creatures, a local queer collective. Next question.
What do you consider “Black Metal”?
Guitar distortion and blast beats, wrapped around themes of loving the devil and/or general misanthropy. We keep it broad, because if we only listened to boring-ass second wave black metal, we’d run out of things to talk about. To be fair, we probably wouldn’t need much to talk about, as the trve kvlt crowd is a bunch of mindless apes.
Also, “blackened metal book club” doesn’t flow as well. Next question.
If I join this “club”, can I become a Mormon?
No. Next question.
What about another religion?
Satanism is a religion, right? We’ll also accept many of the various forms of Hinduism, namely if a reverence for Kali is heavily present. Otherwise, probably not. Next question.
You don’t think it’s wrong to tell others how to live their life? One of the tenants of LeVay-
Shut up, nerd. Next question.
Do y’all listen to… uh… the sketchy ones?
Yes, but our banners are black. We don’t want to hear your politics unless they’re reverbed to the point of incoherence.
In all seriousness, our group swings center-to-center-left, and are generally headstrong in our ideals (most of us, at least.) We’re quite capable of not being swayed by a grown man in clown make-up when he calls for the extermination of Jewish people, earnestly done or not. If we can tune out the mindless drivel pouring out of both sides of the American political canon, we can ignore anything.
And that’s all she wrote. This is Set, signing off. Stay evil, Savannah.
It turns out this subreddit has since been made private. When a subreddit does that, it's usually due to a sudden influx of outsiders criticizing them after trending on /r/all. I find their solution as ironic as it is cowardly.
